If you’re like most online retailers, you have a large site and you optimize it for search engines manually. If that’s the case, odds are good that less than 50% of your pages are optimized.
In our book, an optimized page is a page that ranks and drives traffic. If it doesn’t drive traffic we would consider it not optimized.
Basically, if a page isn’t driving traffic to your site, there’s room for improvement. It’s easy to check what percentage of your pages are optimized. Here’s how:
Go to Google and type in site:yoursitename.com. Take note of the number of pages listed. In the example below, the number is 623,000.
This means there are more than 600,000 pages with the potential to rank and drive traffic.
Next, you want to find out how many of those pages are optimized.
If you use Google Analytics, set the time range to the last 90 days, and head to the Organic Traffic Report. You can find it under Acquisition > Campaigns > Organic Keywords. Then, on the Primary Dimension select “Landing Page.” This lists all pages that have received at least one organic search visitor in the last 90 days. These are all the optimized pages of your site. Count the number of rows in that report.
Now, divide the number of pages from the report by the total number of pages you found in Google earlier. Multiply this figure by 100. This gives you the percentage of optimized pages. For example, if the number for onekingslane.com was 62,300 optimized pages, the percentage would be 10%.
So, how did you do? Did you beat our prediction of 50%? If your percentage is in the single digits, that means you have a lot of opportunity for improvement. If you’re above 50%, say close to 75%, you are doing exceptionally well. Please note that the bigger the site, the harder it is to hit a high percentage of optimized pages.
